Coming up is Waipapa Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in response to the Tararua Steamer Shipping disaster and was completed in 1884. The Waipapa Point Lighthouse is one of the last two wooden lighthouses to be built in New Zealand. It is still operational and was automated in 1976. Visitors can walk down to the beach to watch the resident sea lions but be warned to keep a distance of at least 12 meters because they can be dangerous.
