Coming up is Waipapa Point. The coastline of the Catlin's is notoriously dangerous and there have been many shipwrecks in the region. The most notable of these, and one of New Zealand's worst shipping disasters, was the wreck of the passenger steamer Tararua, which sunk off Waipapa Point on April 29, 1881 en route to Melbourne. 131 people lost their lives in the wreck and only 20 passengers survived.
