You are now approaching Rainbow Mountain Scenic Reserve and Lake Ngawhea. Rainbow Mountain or ‘Maungakakaramea’ means ‘mountain of coloured earth’. Although parts of the mountain are still smouldering, the native vegetation has begun to regenerate and some of the plants are extremely rare and unique to the geothermal area. Take the forestry road to the summit but the last leg of the road is only suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles.
