Coming up on your left/right is Waimangu Volcanic Valley. In 1886, Mt Tarawera erupted and caused the earth to open along a 17km rift and split Mt Tarawera in two. Lake Rotomahana then exploded to 20 times its original size which then formed the seven craters that make up the Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Only 30 years after the eruption, plant life began to grow in the area and today Lake Rotomahana and the Waimangu Volcanic Valley are protected as a Scenic Reserve and Wildlife Refuge. Visitors to the valley can take a walk or boat cruise through the area that end at Lake Rotomahana.
