Coming up ahead is the turnoff to Mount Tarawera. At just 24 kilometers from Rotorua, this volcanic mountain consists of a series of lava domes that were split down the middle by a basaltic eruption. The three peaks caused by the eruption are Ruawahia Peak, Tarawera Peak and Wahanga Peak. The summit of Mount Tarawera reaches over 1000 meters and is surrounded by a number of lakes including Lake Tarawera, Rotomahana, Okataina and Tikitapu. The Tarawera River, originating from Lake Tarawera, flows across the northern part of Mount Tarawera.
