Coming up is the Hamurana Springs Recreation Reserve, a quiet park area offering superb views of Mokoia Island, home to the rare saddleback, stitchbird and North Island robin. It was also the scene of one of Rotorua’s greatest Maori love stories, the romance of Hinemoa and Tutanekai. Hinemoa lived on the mainland and against her family’s wishes, fell in love with Tutanekai, a young island chieftain. Their marriage was forbidden so the couple secretly planned for Hinemoa to paddle across the lake following the sound of Tutanekai’s flute at night. When Hinemoa’s family beached the canoes she was forced instead to tie dried gourds to her body and swim across the lake, warming herself in the hot pool that bears her name, before reuniting with Tutanekai.
