Coming up now is the Hells Gate Wai Ora Spa and Thermal Reserve. At the reserve visitors can view steaming fumaroles and pools of boiling mud. The area is also home to a variety of native fauna and birds and remarkable rock formations. During ancient times, the Maori warriors that were returning from battle would bath their wounds in these pools. When the Europeans arrived in the 1840’s, they also marveled at the spa’s medicinal properties.
