Coming up is the track to Lake Waikareiti, formed about 18,000 years ago in a monumental landslide. There’s the opportunity to hike around the lake to Sandy Bay Hut and join up with the Ruapani Circuit for an overnight tramp, however the two hour return walk to the first shelter is an excellent half day walk and its gradual rise to an altitude of 300 metres makes it a perfect option for families. Red and silver beech trees dominate the bush and rimu rise up above the canopy. Keep an eye out for two of New Zealand’s endangered parrots; the screeching kaka and chattering ‘ki-ki-ki’ of the kakariki, otherwise known as the yellow-crowned parakeet. There’s even a chance for those who are brave enough to view sleeping weta, housed in weta boxes along the way. It takes an hour to reach the day shelter, a great base for picnicking, swimming or boating.
