Coming up ahead is the turnoff to the mud pools at Wai-o-Tapu Scenic Reserve. Wai-O-Tapu has the largest surface area of thermal activity than any hydrothermal system in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The underground streams are heated by magma and the water is said to reach up to 300 degrees Celsius. The water absorbs the minerals out of the rocks and transports them to the surface where they are then absorbed into the soil, resulting in the famous mud pools. There are three walks available for visitors to enjoy. Make your way to Lady Knox Geyser that erupts everyday at 10:15am. The geyser is also surrounded by multi coloured mud pools. The colours are all natural and a result of the different mineral elements.
