You are now approaching the Sulphur Point Bird Sanctuary. Because the water is warm in this area and the environmental conditions are favourable, the sanctuary has become something of a bird spa and home to a number of wading birds like the New Zealand dabchick, shag, pied slilt and Caspian tern. There are also silica inlets in Sulphur Bay that act as a breeding ground for North Island colonies of black-billed gulls. This is also a good spot to watch the sunset.
