You are now travelling through the exotic pine forest of Kaingaroa. Coming up is the township of Murupara, and shortly thereafter the Te Urewera National Park, the largest untouched tract of native New Zealand forest to be found in the North Island. Adjacent on the southern flanks of the National Park is the 55,000 hectare Whirinaki Forest Park, two vast tracts of forest bursting with ancient rimu, totara, matai, kahikatea and beech. The route is sparsely populated and this narrow state highway winds through towering giants, mist shrouded valleys, and dramatic bluffs and mantels cloaked in dark green native forest, until you reach the sparkling brilliance of Lake Waikaremoana.
