You are now approaching Blue Lake otherwise known as Lake Tikitapu. It is the smallest of four lakes that lie between Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera. Lake Tikitapu lies within a volcanic caldera formed in the last 300 000 years. The water appears blue in colour because of the rhyolite and pumice that lies on the bed of the lake, hence its name “The Blue Lake.” In summer time, the lake is a popular destination for water skiing, trout fishing and triathlon competitions.
