Coming up is Clifden Suspension Bridge. Built in 1899 over the Waiau River, the Clifden suspension bridge is an impressive structure built from totara and Australian hardwood, cement towers and steel cables. It is a significant engineering achievement and one of the longest bridges in the South Island. Although no longer open to traffic, visitors may still walk over the bridge. The Clifden Limestone Caves are also in the area and are one of the few cave systems in the Southland. Visitors are welcome to take themselves on a self guided tour of the caves but please be aware that the cave system is subject to flash flooding.
