You are now approaching the Invercargill Water Tower, the city’s most well known landmarks. This 42.5m high tower, constructed out of red brick, was completed in 1889. The tower was designed by William Sharp, a former civil engineer for the Public Works Department. The water tank has the capacity to hold 297,000 liters. The tower is considered a unique example of Victorian architecture and has been classified by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. The water tower still works to provide enough pressure in the water mains in the event that the electric power supply to the pumps was interrupted. Climb the 112 steps inside the Tower to get a fantastic view over the city.
