Coming up is the braided Waiau River, which makes its way south from Lake Manapouri. Established in the early 1900s, Tuatapere was first put on the map because it was a safe place to cross the river. A punt, which had a terminal at the site of the current bridge, was the only means of ferrying goods, stock, and passengers to and from Papatotara. In 1909, the Waiau Hotel was built, and a bridge across the river was completed in 1915. Photos of its opening are on display at the hotel as well as other historical prints, documenting the town’s former development as a sawmilling centre, with some 30 mills in its heyday.
