You are now approaching Lake Hauroko. It was formed by an ancient glacier and while it may not be New Zealand’s largest expanse of inland water, it is certainly the deepest, at some 462 metres. Local legend tells of a Maori princess buried in a cave on Mary Island, directly in front of the Department of Conservation campsite. Lake Hauroko forms one end of the Hump Ridge Track and it is also the departure point of the Hump Ridge Jet which takes a 27 kilometre long scenic spin on the Wairaurahiri River through the spellbinding beech forests of Fiordland National Park.
