You are approaching Hawera I-Site Visitor Information Center and Hawera Water Tower. The tower was completed in 1914 in response to the recurring devastating fires in the town in particular the Great Fire of Hawera in 1895. Insurance companies decided that it would be best to increase the water supply than to increase insurance premiums and so the idea of the water tower was born. Not without incident, the same month that the tower was completed – an earthquake caused a fault in the tower that was corrected and has been standing ever since.
