Coming up on the left/right is the Lizzie Bell Memorial. Those who lost their lives in the wreck of the Lizzie Bell are buried in the memorial cemetery. On the 24th of July 1901, the ship which was travelling from Wellington to New South Wales crashed into the rocks of the Waimate Reef. The entire Lizzie Bell was smashed into pieces and all sorts of things including parts of the ship were washed up on the shore. Pieces of the ship have ended up all over the world and certain parts of it like the bell and spar are still found in this district.
