Coming up is the turn-off to Makahu, a short side-trip leading to the Makahu Tunnel which provides access to the Whanganui National Park via the 42-km long Matemateonga Track, and Aotuhia’s ‘Bridge to Somewhere’, built in 1937. The bridge is similar in design to Mangapurua Valley’s ‘Bridge to Nowhere’, built in 1936 over the Mangapurua Stream, a tributary of the Whanganui River, to service farms in the Mangapurua Valley.
