You are now entering the village of Pungarehu. Here you will find the world famous Parihaka Pa which hosts the Parihaka Peace Festival. The pa is important in Maori history because these inhabitants would perform peaceful protests while the white settlers confiscated their land. During the 1870s and 1880s Parihaka was the largest Maori village in New Zealand and became the centre of a non-violent campaign against loss of their land. There are also a few small stores for the local dairy farmers.
