Coming up is the settlement of Whangamomona, a tiny town that declared itself a ‘republic’ after bureaucratic bungling in 1989 saw it realigned with Wanganui rather than with Taranaki, as was traditional. Nowadays, town folks – all 20 permanent residents at the last count – celebrate ‘independence day’ in January in style, and hold presidential elections. Past presidents have included Billy Gumboot the goat, who ate the opposition’s votes in the ’99 election but died in active service (his gravesite is now an attraction), and Tai the poodle, who was top dog until an assassination attempt left him in no state to rule! The locals’ quirky ways are readily apparent – don’t be surprised when you see signs on the outskirts of town stating: “Welcome to the Republic of Whangamomona. For a safe and memorable passage, please purchase a passport from the hotel, café, or border patrol.”
