Coming up is the turn-off to the Forgotten Highway, otherwise known as State Highway 43, a winding 155-kilometre heritage trail flanked by the railroad that runs between Stratford and Taumarunui. Its a journey of remembrance, a reminder of the determined settlers who tried and in some cases failed to scratch a living from this isolated hill country. There are several historic attractions to see en route, including disused coalmines, old bridges, tunnels, and riverboat landings, and although its only a three-hour drive all up, to make the most of it, you really need to allow a full day.
