You are now approaching Paritutu Rock and the Centennial Reserve and Lookout coming up on your left/right. Paritutu Rock is found at the eastern end of New Plymouth Harbour and is the remains of yet another volcano. There is a track which goes up the rock and is found on the northern side. It takes a bit of effort to get to the top but it’s worth it. The views are fantastic and you can see the entire New Plymouth coastline, the city, the port and the Sugar Loaf islands. Paritutu used to be taller but was flattened by the Maori during pre-European times. They did this so that they could build houses on the site. Charter companies offer tours of the Sugar Loaf islands and visitors have the option of going diving too.
