You are now approaching Homer Tunnel. The Homer Tunnel took over 20 years to complete and was constructed through the First World War and the Depression of the 1930s.Milford Sound was inaccessible by road until1953 when the Homer Tunnel was completed. The tunnel is 945 metres above sea level and is 1.2km long. Please note that drivers MUST obey the traffic lights and 'No Stopping' signs if instructed to do so to eliminate traffic congestion in summer and avalanche risks in winter.
