Coming up is the small township of Mercer, known to Maori as Te Paina, or The Point. It was here that the Waikato Military Settlement was established during the New Zealand Wars. By 1866 Mercer had become a busy river port for paddle steamers, which traded up and down the river between Ngaruwahia and Hamilton. Mercer’s main street features a relic from these days of old, the turret from the riverboat Pioneer, built in Sydney, and today forming part of a war memorial.
