Coming up is the turn-off to the wharf from where the original milk-and-cream transport boat, MV Cygnet departs on an intriguing journey up the Mokau River, once a major arterial raiding and trading route between the coast and the Central North Island. Today’s voyage is a kaleidoscope of dense virgin forest, nikau and punga groves, rickety whitebaiters’ stands – some 323 of them at last count – and historical sites, including an old Public Works limestone quarry operated from 1913 to 1928.
