Keep a look out to the right for your first glimpses of the Waikato River. It travels some 425 odd kilometres, or 264 miles from Lake Taupo to Port Waikato to meet the sea. The Waikato River was a vital transport and trading link for the Maori, and this same route brought the first Europeans into the area, leading to the establishment of Hamilton, in the 1860s. Today the river is used for recreational purposes, and the power stations bordering its shores make use of its waters to generate one-third of New Zealand’s hydro-electric power.
