You are approaching Lake Karapiro and Maungatautari Wildlife Have. Lake Karapiro is an artificial lake forming part of a hydroelectricity scheme on the Waikato River and has been called one of New Zealand’s best rowing spots. Maungatautari is 3400 hectares of forest and an extinct volcano which lies in the Waikato basin. This is an ideal place for those who enjoy walking and bird watching. Bear in mind that if you wish to walk to the peaks of Maungatautari or Pukeatua you’ll have to be a relatively fit and experienced hiker.
