You are now approaching the Mangaokewa Scenic Reserve coming up on the left/right hand side. This area was important to the Maoris for hunting and finding medicinal herbs. Remember that this is sacred ground and needs to be respected. The reserve is quite rugged but has great exotic and native birdlife. Cross the bridge and walk up the river to a waterfall. There are plenty of places to go swimming and enjoy a picnic. You should be able to see the remains of a limestone cave just above the stream.
