Coming up is Mount Taupiri, the sacred burial ground of Waikato Maori – look closely and you will see graves sprawling over the hill alongside the motorway. On the other side of the river a mission station was established in the 1830s by the Anglican missionary Benjamin Yates Ashwell; its school was considered to be one of the finest in the nation, receiving annual grants from the governor’s fund until the outbreak of war in the Waikato in 1863.
