Coming up is the turn-off to the 17,000 hectare Mt Pirongia Forest Park, the largest tract of unbroken native bush in the Waikato region. The park is home to New Zealand’s tallest known kahikatea – or white pine tree – and at least 58 species of tree, 44 shrubs and 110 different types of native fern also grow here. There are several trails to hike within the park including a strenuous climb to Mt Pirongia’s summit.
