Coming up to the south-west is the 959 metre peak of Mt Pirongia, the highest mountain in Waikato, which plays an integral role in the history and traditions of local Tainui Maori. They have a proverb (or whakatuki) which says: “E kore ahau e tu mokemoke, ko nga tuituitanga, a tai, a awa, ki etahi ano o nga maunga, e mau nei ki te toka maru”, meaning “I, Pirongia, do not stand lonely and alone. I am bound by the tide, to the rivers, and to other mountains, strong and unmoveable.” Mt Pirongia is volcanic and was produced when the earth’s molten interior was pushed out through tears in its crust. As the mountain draws closer you will see many of its volcanic features: its conical peak and dome, sharp edged cliffs, deep gorges and rocky outcrops.
