Coming up is Papawai Marae, the site of the first Maori Parlimant. Visitors need special permission from the Maori people to enter the area but you can see the meeting house and its carvings from a distance. The carvings on the Marae face inwards but according to the locals they should face outwards. This was the main meeting point for the Maori people in the early days of New Zealand where the government and the local Maori met. A small house that belonged to a Maori chief still stands at Papawai Marae.
