You are now travelling on the road which leads to Cape Palliser lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1896 from materials transported to Cape Palliser by boat, as the route by road was not constructed until 1941. These shores were once the principal points of access for early European settlers to the region, who arrived in the mid-to-late-1800s to set up sheep stations, build homes and cultivate the fertile farmlands of the Wairarapa.
