Coming up is the turn-off to the Waihi Falls at Horoeka, a spectacular waterfall that plummets into a deep pool. From here it’s a further 30- to 45-minute drive to the beach at Akitio or Herbertville; both are popular local haunts for fishing and surfing. From Herbertville Beach you can walk to Cape Turnagain, named by Captain Cook after the action he took on his first voyage to New Zealand in 1769, when crashing surf prevented him from bringing the Endeavour past the Cape.
