You are now travelling near the Whanganui River. The river is the second longest river on the North Island and was known as the “Wanganui River” until the name was reverted back to “Whanganui” in 1991 in accordance with the wishes of the Whanganui iwi – or local Maori people. The river was of special spiritual importance for the local Maori people and they consider it their source of spiritual and physical sustenance. In pre-European times it was home to a large number of Maori villages.
