Coming up is the turn-off to Nga Manu, a 15 hectare park privately funded by a charitable trust dedicated to the preservation of NZ flora and fauna. As well as preserving this site which is one of the last remaining tracts of coastal lowland swamp forest that survived early milling in the area, the trust operate a number of breed and release recovery programmes for kiwi, brown teal, blue duck and tuatara, and in addition to this nurse sick and injured native wildlife back to good health. At the centre of the park is an enormous lake. It flows into other wetland areas full of native waterfowl including scaup, or NZ diving ducks. There are aviaries full of kakariki and North Island kaka, a nocturnal house housing kiwi, inanga and koura, and lots of native gecko species including the Northland green gecko, the Nelson green gecko, and the forest gecko. Tuatara are another highlight, and eels are feed here every day at 2pm.
