You are now approaching the village of Blackball, known for its historic gold and coal mining history. The miners living in this area in the early 1900’s are remembered for their revolutionary strike action known as the “Famous Crib Strike”. The famous “crib time” strike led to the formation of the “Red” Federation of Labour. The strike started when the mine manager fired seven men who asked for a 30 minute lunch break instead of their usual 15 minutes. The rest of the men went on strike in support of the seven men and after ten weeks of striking the company reemployed the fired miners and extended the lunch break to 30 minutes.
