Coming up is the small town of Pukekura and the Bushman’s Center. Pukekura means ‘blue hill’ and the town claims to be the smallest town on the West Coast, with a population of two! Timber was the towns’ main industry until the mid 1980’s but today the town relies on revenue as a tourism centre. Bushman’s Centre is a good place to stop for a bite to eat and a wander around the deer and mountain goat park. The onsite café’s specialty is Possum Pie. Possum is known as the “Chickens of the Forest” in New Zealand and the pies are reputably tasty. Accommodation is also available in and around this area.
