You are approaching the Coulthard & Hall Monument. The monument was built in memory of two men who were shot and robbed while transporting miners wages. The murderer stole almost 4000 pounds from the state mine payroll and was later identified as Frederick William Egger. Eggers was later caught and became the last man to be hung in New Zealand in 1918. Also note that the small town of Runanga is also coming up. “Runanga” is a Maori word that means ‘meeting place’.
