You are approaching Guy Menzies Monument and Replica Bi Plane. Guy Menzies was the Australian aviator who flew the first solo flight across the Tasman Sea to the West Coast of New Zealand. Menzies flew a ‘Southern Cross Junior’ for the flight to Blenheim but was thrown off course because of bad weather and after an 11 hour and 45 minute flight, he crash-landed upside down in the La Fontaine Swamp near Hari Hari. Despite his unfortunate landing, Menzies broke the previous flight record by 2 and a half hours. Adjacent to the monument is a hangar housing a replica Biplane that was constructed and funded by volunteers.
