You are now approaching the Historic Brunner Mine Site. The Brunner Mine was the greatest source of coal in New Zealand. At its peak over 300 men were employed by the mine but in 1896, an explosion went off at the mine and the event is still known as New Zealand’s greatest work place disaster. Sixty five men were killed by the explosion and the impact on West Coast families lasted for generations. Visit the memorial commemorating the disaster at the Taylorville side of the complex.
