You are now approaching the town of Kumara. Located just 30km’s south of Greymouth and close to the western end of State Highway 73, this village was one of the country’s chief gold mining centres. However since the 1900’s, the population has decreased to just over 300 people. Interestingly so, it was the home town of Prime Minister Richard Seddon, who served New Zealand until his death in 1906.
