Coming up on the left/right is the small settlement of Lyell. This was a busy settlement during the mid 1800s once gold quartz had been discovered in the area. The township soon had a population of 5000 people along with schools, cemeteries, churches and taverns. Today the settlement is quiet and only the cemetery is left. There are walkways and tracks to explore and these actually follow old trails which go through the steep and rocky streams up into the hills. You can also visit the old Croesus battery where quartz rock would be pounded into powder so the gold could be removed.
