You are now approaching the Strongman Mine Disaster. Just 11kms north-east of Greymouth, this was New Zealandss largest underground coal mine. The mine was opened in 1939 and had an accident-free record until 1967 when an explosion blew through the section of the mine known as Greens No.2 Rise. The explosion took the lives of 19 miners. The rest of the staff on duty were saved because the explosive fireball struck a wet patch in the tunnel. The fireball slowed and went out and in seconds the danger had passed. A full evacuation of the mine was ordered and the mine has been remembered for the devastating incident ever since.
