You are now approaching Fox Glacier ‘Glacier Country’. This refers to the 12km long glacier that was named after ex Prime Minister, Sir William Fox. Fox Glacier falls 2600m and is fed by four alpine glaciers from the Southern Alps down to the coast. It is said to be one of the few glaciers to end in rainforest and at only 300 meters above sea level. Similar to the Franz Josef Glacier, it is one of the easiest glaciers to access and its terminal face is an easy walk from Fox Glacier Village. With over 10 000 people visiting every day, this is a major tourist attraction during high season.
