Coming up is Lake Lanthe. A number of streams flow into the lake at this point which eventually empties into the Wanganui River. The lake is very close to the coast and the small towns of Pukekura and Harihari. Stateway Highway 6 runs along the eastern shore of the lake between Ross and the Franz Josef Glacier. Lake Lanthe is good for boating, swimming and trout fishing. If you spot tram tracks, they are reminiscent of a tramline that was established here many years ago to support the logging industry. But when the sawmill was closed, the tram was discontinued to these parts – the line remains as a reminder of the regions prosperous past.
