You are now approaching the turnoff to Lake Matheson and Aoraki Lookout. Lake Matheson is a traditional food gathering place for the Maori people because of the abundance of long finned eels and water birds. The lake was formed more than fourteen thousand years ago by glaciations and is famous for reflecting New Zealand’s highest peaks, Aoraki or Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Aoraki is breathtaking and a major tourist attraction complete with amazing views, challenging hikes and the Mount Cook Village, a tourist centre at the base of the mountain.
