You are now approaching the Lewis Pass Heritage Highway. Lewis Pass leads from the Lewis River into the Maruia River. The pass was once a route used by the Maoris and was traveled by Henry Lewis in the 1860s. After state highway 7 was built during the economic depression of the 1930s, this became the main route between Canterbury and Westport and Nelson. Just east of the Lewis Pass road is St James Walkway. This 5 day hike covers a distance of 66 kilometers and was the first walkway to go through sub-alpine terrain. The entire highway offers beautiful scenery and from here visitors can access hot springs as well as picnic, camping and hunting spots.
