Coming up on the left/right is the turnoff for Waiuta and Blackwater. Waiuta used to be a gold mining town after gold was discovered on the Birthday Reef in 1905. The mine was later closed after a ventilator shaft collapsed. The surrounding forest still contains relics from the mining days and some of the town’s old buildings are still standing like the barber shop and police station. For anyone who enjoys spending time in nature Waiuta is the place to be. A visit to Blackwater is a chance to go cave rafting in the Dragons Blackwater cave.
